MILWAUKEE _ The Pirates swung a last-minute deal with the New York Yankees to acquire right-hander Ivan Nova, a source told the Post-Gazette.
Nova, 29, is a free agent after this season. In 21 games, 15 starts, Nova has a 4.90 ERA and has allowed 1.8 home runs per nine innings.
The Pirates have not announced the trade or the official return.
The Pirates also traded former lefties with the New York Mets, trading Jon Niese for Antonio Bastardo. They tried to trade Niese, whom they acquired for Neil Walker this past winter, earlier this season after a poor performance out of the rotation, but eventually moved him to the bullpen.
Bastardo spent 2015 with the Pirates and signed with the Mets last winter. He has a 4.74 ERA in 41 appearances, with 9.5 strikeouts per nine and 4.3 walks per nine.
