A redesigned yakatabune roofed pleasure boat, painted in bright pink with white polka dots in a bid to attract young customers, will start cruising in Tokyo Bay in December.
The bold move by Amitatsu, a long-established boat operator founded in 1916 in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo, stemmed from a lunch cruise service that it started in an attempt to draw younger clientele. To a further appeal to women, it came up with the idea of making the boat look "Instagrammable."
The vessel was shown to the press last week.
The cruise, which will last about two hours, will start and finish at Harumi Pier. Going along the Sumida River, Odaiba bayfront area and other spots, it will cost 8,800 yen per person, including tax.
As measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, passenger capacity has been reduced from the usual 70 to 30, and partitions have been installed between seats.
Although the pandemic-driven hardship continues, Amitatsu President Satoru Takahashi said, "We want to pass on the historic culture of pleasure cruising to the next generation. We hope more young people will take an interest in it."
