Why Is It Called the Pink Moon?
Despite its name, the Pink Moon does not actually appear pink. The term originates from Native American traditions, where tribes named full moons based on seasonal changes. This particular full moon was named after wild ground phlox, one of the earliest blooming pink flowers of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
So instead of a rosy hue, observers can expect the moon to shine in warm shades of orange, gold, or copper, especially during its rise.
The Science Behind the Golden Glow
The moon’s striking color near the horizon is explained by a simple atmospheric effect. When the moon is low in the sky, the light reflecting off it must travel through a thicker layer of Earth’s atmosphere.
During this journey, shorter wavelengths of light—such as blue and violet—are scattered away. What remains are the longer wavelengths, like red, orange, and yellow, which give the moon its rich, warm tones. This is the same phenomenon responsible for the vivid colors of sunrise and sunset.
A Special Appearance by Spica
Adding to the spectacle, the Pink Moon will be accompanied by a bright celestial neighbor. Close to the moon, observers will spot Spica, the brightest star in the Virgo constellation. This binary star system will appear as a brilliant point of light, creating a visually striking pairing in the night sky.
A Moon That Sets the Calendar
Beyond its beauty, the Pink Moon holds cultural and religious significance. It plays a key role in determining the dates of major holidays like Easter and Passover.
According to tradition, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Since the equinox occurred on March 20 this year, the April full moon establishes the timing for the holiday.
