A man has died in a microlight plane crash southeast of Melbourne.

Police say the pilot was taking off from a Koo Wee Rup Road airfield when the weight-shift type aircraft crashed about 6.50am on Sunday.

The 'very experienced" pilot was killed on impact, according to the Sports Aviation Federation of Australia.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the pilot's family and friends at this sad time," a statement from the Federation said.

"Victoria Police are currently investigating the accident and the Sports Aviation Federation of Australia is assisting the Police.

"It is too early to determine the cause of the accident and until the investigation is complete, we cannot comment."

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
