Pillion passenger on motorbike fired handgun at men outside bookies

The pillion passenger on a motorbike fired a handgun at three men stood outside shops in Bootle.

The motorbike stopped on Hawthorne Road last Wednesday night when the pillion passenger opened fire at the group of men stood outside shops.

Nobody was hurt.

Police have now told the ECHO that a semi-automatic handgun was used in the 10pm shooting, which caused damage to a convenience store and bookmakers.

During the early hours of Thursday morning there was an arson attack on a nearby family home.

Police have said they are keeping an 'open mind' as to whether the suspicious fire in Norfolk Close was linked to the shooting.

On Thursday police released CCTV images of two men on a motorbike they would like to speak with in relation to the incident.

Temporary Chief Inspector Matthew Moscrop said: “The pillion passenger, who shot the weapon, was wearing a distinctive black helmet with two prominent green stripes, and we believe this could have caught the attention of pedestrians and motorists in the area before or after the incident.

“Did you see these two males leaving the scene after the incident at 10pm? We know they rode along Hawthorne Road in the direction of Kirkdale - did you see where they went after that? If you were driving in the area at the time, we would urge you to check dashcam footage that might show them.

“We believe this shooting was targeted against one or more of three males who were on the pavement. Unfortunately they are not co-operating with our enquiries at this time, which makes it all the more crucial that anyone who does have information gets in touch with us or calls Crimestoppers.”

A 31-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a Section 1 firearm has been released under investigation.

Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area, has dashcam footage or any information, is asked to DM @MerPolCC or call 101 quoting 19100322004.
