Piers Morgan slams "embarrassing" Erik ten Hag after Man Utd boss claims first trophy

Piers Morgan believes it was "embarrassing" for Erik ten Hag to dance with his Manchester United players after their Carabao Cup final win on Sunday.

The Red Devils defeated Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley to secure their first major trophy in six years. Goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford got Ten Hag's side - who can still win the Premier League title, FA Cup and Europa League this term - over the line.

Ten Hag was delighted with the victory and celebrated by dancing with Antony and Lisandro Martinez, who both played under the Dutchman at Ajax last season. Yet talkTV presenter Morgan thinks Ten Hag should have been more reserved at full-time.

Morgan tweeted: "Can't believe I'm watching a Manchester United manager and players dancing with joy after winning the Carabao Cup... so embarrassing."

Ten Hag has turned Man Utd's fortunes around since he arrived from Ajax last summer. During the 2021/22 campaign, the Old Trafford club finished sixth in the Premier League and failed to win a major trophy for the fifth consecutive season.

Yet Man Utd are flying under Ten Hag. They are third in the Premier League - eight points behind leaders Arsenal - and are still in the FA Cup and Europa League. A top-four finish and a trophy would have been viewed as a success at the start of the term.

Man Utd will face West Ham at home in the last 16 of the FA Cup, while their next opponents in Europe are Real Betis. They knocked out Barcelona - who are seven points clear of Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga - in the last round of the Europa League.

Despite these impressive facts, Morgan is a critic of Ten Hag - mainly due to his handling of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal international, 38, claimed Ten Hag doesn't respect him during an explosive interview with Morgan last November.

That led to Ronaldo leaving Man Utd by mutual consent and joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in January. Morgan has since called Ten Hag a "clown" and "arrogant".

He has also been critical of Ten Hag signing Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley to replace Ronaldo. "Manchester United fans trying to pretend they'd rather have Weghorst up front than Ronaldo is hilarious," tweeted Morgan on Sunday. "He's dreadful."

Although Morgan was not impressed by Ten Hag's dance moves, Roy Keane was. The Man Utd legend was critical of former Brazil manager Tite for dancing during the World Cup in Qatar, but even he could understand why Ten Hag was overjoyed.

"The lads are having a bit of a dance there, my goodness," Keane told Sky Sports. "Not bad actually, to be fair!"

Keane later told Ten Hag "you should resign after that [the dancing], tonight" - to which the Man Utd manager laughed and replied, "I hope we can do it more often."
