Piers Morgan mocks Dan Walker as Strictly launch show hits lowest ratings in 11 years

Piers Morgan mocked his rival, Dan Walker, after Strictly Come Dancing's launch show hit its lowest rating in 11 years.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter regularly hits out at his BBC Breakfast rival but the news of Strictly's low ratings was the perfect opportunity for him to make a joke.

Taking to his Twitter, Piers retweeted the news that the dancing competition premiere only had seven million viewers compared to previous years.

"Congrats @mrdanwalker," the 56-year-old tweeted along with a thumbs-up emoji.

Piers' jab divided people in the comment section with some adding their two cents.

One user said: "It's still an enjoyable show but in need of a revamp and people the public have heard of. A chef’s daughter is not a celebrity."

However, another disagreed with the user's comment and added: "Do some research. She has her own show, she's not just Gordon's daughter."

One person hit out at Piers and said: "7.3 million is far better than the 1.5/1.8 million your life stories show is pulling in though."

Another wanted Dan's former co-host, Louise Minchin, to join the show and said: "I know its me, I'm old, but I only know two of the 'celebrities' .

"It's also so predictable when the celeb meets their pro. "you're the one I was hoping to get". It's a shame they couldn't talk @louiseminchin into doing it. Louise is so competitive, she would have been great."

Strictly launched with 7million viewers this past Saturday which is the lowest audience since the series introduced a standalone “pairing up” show in 2010.

The numbers were lower than last year's opener – delayed because of Covid - which aired in October and pulled in 8.6million viewers, the show's highest launch since 2017 (8.8m) and up 800,000 in the 2019 audience of 7.8million.

This weekend, the show peaked at 7.3million, with the episode focusing on the contestants meeting their professional dance partners.

The standalone launch episodes were introduced for the eighth series of Strictly, in 2010.

It usually involves a red carpet entrance, introductions between contestants and pros, as well as a group dance.

A source claimed the low figures were due to the warm weather over the weekend.

“Lots of people had been out and about enjoying the early autumn sunshine and will probably watch on catch-up today," the insider said.

“The ratings are sure to pick up once the live shows start next weekend, and viewers get to see whether the celebs can actually dance – or not.”
