Piers Morgan defiantly shrugs off Ofcom complaints after breaking record with Meghan row

Piers Morgan has responded to breaking the Ofcom complaints record with his comments about the Duchess of Sussex.

The former Good Morning Britain host, 55, resigned from the ITV breakfast show last week after his controversial appearances on the March 8 and March 9 episodes.

The episodes proved to be the last for Piers, who had displayed outspoken views against Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex during his appearance on Monday, March 8.

In the episode, Piers appeared to cast doubt on the veracity of Meghan's claims in her recent interview with Oprah Winfrey that she had been suicidal during her time working as a senior member of the Royal Family.

The following day in what would be his final show, Piers stormed off set after a disagreement with weather presenter Alex Beresford regarding his comments about the Duchess.

Now, taking to Twitter, Piers has defiantly claimed that the majority of the British public support his sharing of his views.

The comments come after broadcasting regulator Ofcom revealed Good Morning Britain had broken their complaints record with an eye-watering 57,121 Ofcom complaints from Tuesday March 2 until Tuesday March 15.

He tweeted on Wednesday: "Only 57,000? I've had more people than that come up & congratulate me in the street for what I said.

"The vast majority of Britons are right behind me."

The number of complaints dwarfs the 30,000 raised after the Black Lives Matter-inspired routine from dance group Diversity's on Britain's Got Talent last year.

An Ofcom spokesperson said last week of the Good Morning Britain episode on March 8: "We have launched an investigation into Monday's episode of Good Morning Britain under our harm and offence rules."

Meghan herself also made a formal complaint to ITV after Piers' comments on GMB on March 8, the channel confirmed.

Speaking outside his West London home on March 10 - the day after his resignation from Good Morning Britain - Piers doubled down on his views.

"I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that’s entirely their right," Piers said.

He went on: “I don’t believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she’s done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.

"If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly-held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it."

Piers described his parting with ITV as “amicable”, saying: “I had a good chat with ITV and we agreed to disagree.

"I’m just going to take it easy and see how we go."

Meghan's interview alongside her husband Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex with Oprah Winfrey has also sparked complaints to broadcasting regulator Ofcom.

More than 4,000 complaints were made in the same period as those regarding Good Morning Britain.

ITV aired the blockbuster interview on March 8, the day following its original airing on CBS in the US.

The interview itself saw the Duke and Duchess of Sussex address their reasons for stepping down from their duties as senior members of the Royal Family.
