Pictures show the aftermath of a lorry fire that shut the M6 for hours

The M6 was closed for several hours on Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle carrying propane cylinders caught fire.

Both sides of the carriageway were shut down between junctions 19 for Knutsford and 20 for the M56 after the vehicle went up in flames.

Six fire engines from Lymm, Birchwood, Stockton Heath, Northwich, Altrincham and Penketh were sent to tackle the blaze after being called at 2.40pm.

North West Motorway Police said the driver and the passenger were both said to be okay, with no injuries reported.

The incident led to long tailbacks, with traffic later advised to come off at junctions 20 or 19, or to avoid the area.

The northbound carriageway was reopened first, shortly before 5pm, while the southbound was fully opened around an hour later.

Cheshire Fire Service has released photos showing the burnt out vehicle after the fire was brought under control.
