Pictures show crowds gathering for huge blazing bonfire in the Calders

A huge bonfire has been set alight in Edinburgh, with crowds gathering against advice from the police.

This year, officers across Scotland had advised the public to be extra cautious on Bonfire night, with all public firework displays cancelled.

However, despite warnings from the Fire and Rescue Service as well as the police, the towering blaze was spotted burning in the Calders estate this evening.

Flames from the bonfire can be seen to reach the height of the two-storey building adjacent from the site, with at least 40 onlookers standing around it.

One eye-witness described the scene as "well-behaved", and added that the bonfire is an annual event in the area.

Earlier this week, Scots were advised that riot police are ready to descend on Edinburgh tonight if there are signs of anti-social behaviour.

Police Scotland have also urged parents to have a "very frank" conversation with their children over the potential danger of engaging with fireworks.

However, despite the advice, a crew from the Fire and Rescue Service were subject to a horrendous attack on Wednesday evening, when missiles were thrown at them while they attended to a bonfire.
