The council has started to lay new grass at Piccadilly Gardens after it was likened to a 'mud bath' following the Christmas Markets.
Recent photos showed how the grass at the city centre gardens had become trodden and sparse following multiple events there, including the EURO cup fan zone, Christmas market stalls and the New Year's Eve countdown event. Council bosses previously promised that plans would be made to lay new turf 'as soon as possible'.
Previously, on Twitter, @WCONNOLLY2512 shared a picture of the muddied gardens, writing: "Piccadilly Gardens post Xmas markets. Just a mud bath and eyesore wooden/metal structures. The gardens are no more."

But this afternoon (January 21), councillor and city centre spokesperson Pat Karney posted a picture of new grass behind some fencing in Piccadilly Gardens. He said in a tweet that the work was 'coming along nicely'.
He wrote: "Coming along nicely. Council Staff doing a brilliant job. @JohnRooManc."
Earlier this month, he acknowledged the poor state the gardens had been left in. He said: "As you can see, Piccadilly Gardens is in its post-Christmas conditions. It's an unavoidable mess after thousands attended the Christmas celebrations. It is all temporary until we get Albert Square back in use for the markets.
"We will be re-turfing it as soon as possible before it is used for St Patrick's and St George's day celebrations next."
