Phillip Schofield supports Prince Harry amid backlash over mental health series

Phillip Schofield was quick to show his support for Prince Harry on Tuesday's This Morning.

The 36-year-old royal released the trailer for The Me You Can’t See on Monday on his and wife Megan Markle's Archewell website.

In the new series, Harry opens up to Oprah Winfrey once again, discussing how we talk about mental health and seeking help.

The trailer includes celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Glenn Close, along with images of Harry and his brother Prince William at the 1997 funeral of their mother, Princess Diana.

After watching the clip, Phillip commented: "I mean it looks like an amazing series, and even watching Good Morning Britain this morning and listening the news, this is utterly polarising.

"Because you've got some people saying he's throwing his family under the bus, some people saying he should keep his head down and be quiet.

"And then there are other people - and I’ve gotta say me included - that any awareness for the mental health issues that we have on this planet right now, any awareness whatsoever, both his brother and his father and his mother all talked about mental wellbeing, but Harry can't."

Guest Nicola Thorp agreed with Phillip and said: "Exactly, I'm completely with you, I don't understand. It's really upsetting, particularly after Mental Health Awareness Week."

However, fellow guest Nick Ferrari suggested that the airing of the documentary could have been delayed due to the death of the Duke of Edinburgh.

But Phillip commented: "The thing is, this documentary would have been planned considerably earlier than the sad death of the Duke of Edinburgh, so when is the right time?

"You have an entire American network waiting and then they put it on pause, bearing in mind that this is for an American audience principally, although you would hope it would reach a worldwide audience which it will because of the people involved in it it.

"But they are maybe less sensitive to the timing than we would be," the father-of-two added.

But as Nick stressed that they could have waited a month or so because the Queen is still mourning the death of her husband, Nicola disagreed and said she doesn't think it would have much made of a difference.

Phillip and Holly Willoughby discussed the topic on Tuesday's This Morning (ITV)

The discussion came after Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid cast doubt on whether Prince Harry is fulfilling his mission of helping people with their mental health.

During Tuesday's show, royal biographer Hugo Vickers told GMB: "It's a pity to use images of a very sad time in his life at his mother's funeral as a promotional thing."

Susanna remarked: "Yes! Going to be discussing that a little bit later on. Has he opened up too much?" Or by opening up that much, is he helping people?"

Earlier in the show, Susanna also said: "You're dragging your family into criticism aren't you?

"Anyone who goes into therapy is going to be drawn into a discussion but I'm not sure your parents want to hear that discussion."

This Morning airs weekdays at 10m on ITV.
