Phillip Schofield's choice to announce sexuality questioned by Piers Morgan

Phillip Schofield's choice to announce his sexuality was questioned by Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain.

On Friday, Phillip, who is married with daughters, announced on social media that he is gay in a lengthy post.

But Piers questioned why Phillip felt the need to publicly announce his sexuality.

Sat alongside Susanna Reid and guests Kelly and Sharon Osbourne and Joan Collins, Piers launched into a discussion about Phillip's decision.

Piers and Susanna were in LA (ITV)

Piers said: "Should we even be talking about this? Should Phillip Schofield have felt the need to do this?

"Have we not reached a stage now of tolerance and acceptance in making a public statement about your sexuality?

"Why are we still making people go through this?"

Joan answered: "That’s what I thought when I saw it. I thought, why does he have to do that? It seems like he was living a fine life. Everyone who knew him knew he was gay. Why does he want to tell anybody and confess, as it were?

Joan Collins offered her opinion as well (ITV)

"We take for granted these days that people are gay, lesbian or trans, or whatever. It seems a little odd to make a big pronounced statement..."

However, Kelly soon switched the tone of the conversation saying: "I loved Phillip Schofield when I thought he was straight and I love Phillip Schofield now that I know he is gay. It makes no difference."

Previously, Piers spoke out to support his ITV colleague.

On Friday he posted on Twitter: "Takes a lot of guts to do this, not least when you’re a very public figure and know it will all be dissected in a very public way. Sending my very best to @schofe & his family."
