Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby in hot water for 'miserable' start to This Morning

Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby have come under fire for a 'miserable' start to This Morning.

Fans are used to tuning into the bright and cheery ITV programme each week day at 10am.

But on Wednesday, viewers were instead greeted with Holly and Phillip in the studio - but in black and white.

The unusual star also included rather dramatic music as the words 'Winter is Coming' appeared beneath the hosts.

Then, footage from yesterday's government coronavirus press conference was played out on screen.

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson was joined by the chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, and chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance for the Downing Street briefing on the government's winter Covid plan.

Within it, "Professor Whitty said: "Winter is coming and people should really take this seriously."

After this moment from the press conference was played, it cut back to Phillip who said: "Winter is coming, of that they're absolutely sure."

Holly giggled and replied: "They can't stop that. That is a fact. One of the few facts we can be on solid ground with."

Phillip continued: "Talks of a plan B, 7,000 hospitalisations a day; more than this time last year...odd because we a vaccine."

Holly then asked: "How can that be?" before Phillip quipped: "How can they be so miserable?"

But This Morning viewers were unimpressed.

Phillip made a quip about them being 'miserable' (ITV)

"Great to see Holly and Phil taking the mickey out of Chris Whitty. How fortunate they must be not to have been affected by this global pandemic. Disgusting," one tweeted.

Another said: "Re. the start of your programme today: perhaps be a bit more respectful of the fact that well over a hundred people are still dying every day of Covid. Families are grieving for their loved ones every day. How is this a joke to you people?"
