Philippines earthquake: Country rocked by second tremor in space of a day

The Philippines has been rocked by a second earthquake in the space of a day.

The new quake hit at about 6am UK time and measured at a 6.4 magnitude.

It struck the country’s central region, near the town of San Julian.

People were seen dashing out of their homes, with office workers scampered to safety.

However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The earthquake prompted the closure of schools and workplaces in San Julian, where cracks on roads, small buildings and a church were reported.

Power was also cut as a precaution in the quake's aftermath, officials said.

It came after a 6.1 tremor hit the country’s north on Monday, killing at least 11 people.

Rescuers worked through the night to recover bodies in the rubble of a supermarket that crashed down in the town of Porac.

Four bodies were discovered, though one man was pulled out alive, prompting cheers and applause from volunteers.

The Philippines is one of the world's most disaster-prone countries, with frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

It lies on the so-called Pacific "ring of fire": a seismically active arc of volcanos and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.
