Philippe Coutinho to Arsenal verdict as Willian is sent message ahead of sealing free transfer

Here's all the news from around the Emirates Stadium over the past 24 hours.

Keown delivers Coutinho verdict

Arsenal great Martin Keown has given three reasons why Arsenal are making the correct transfer decision with Philippe Coutinho.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with both Chelsea winger Willian and former Liverpool midfielder Coutinho in recent weeks.

But Mikel Arteta's men are prioritising a move for 31-year-old Willian over Coutinho at this stage.

Keown believes this is the right call because Willian knows the Premier League, doesn't need to relocate and is a top player when he's on his game.

Luiz revival hands Arteta clear direction

Rewind just one year and rather than having a plethora of Champions League and Europa League games to look forward to watching, Premier League clubs were in the midst of yet another summer transfer deadline day.

By the time August 8, 2019, swung around, Arsenal had completed the bulk of their business. In regard to first-team arrivals, Gabriel Martinelli was signed on July 2 while deals for William Saliba and Dani Ceballos were both confirmed on July 25.

Then came the capture of Nicolas Pepe on a record £72million transfer fee on August 1, leaving the Gunners with a week to wrap up their deals.

First to arrive on deadline day was Kieran Tierney, completing his highly-anticipated moved from Celtic before the fast-moving deal for David Luiz from Chelsea was announced later that evening.

Rudiger sends Willian message

Antonio Rudiger says Willian joining Arsenal would be a huge loss for Chelsea but the Germany centre back said that the decision must solely come down to the Brazilian winger.

Willian, who has not travelled to Germany for tonight's Champions League round of 16-second leg against Bayern Munich, is out of contract once Chelsea are knocked out of the competition and is expected to swap West London for North ahead of next season.

The 31-year-old was demanding a three-year deal to stay at Stamford Bridge but Chelsea were only willing to offer two years and head coach Frank Lampard said that the club tried everything they could to convince one of the squad's most experienced players to stay.
