TMZ sources say he recovered well enough to go back to prison but then relapsed and was rushed back before dying on Saturday.

Spector was best known for creating The Wall Of Sound technique and was behind classics including Righteous Brothers You Lost that Lovin' Feeling, "Unchained Melody" and the Ronnettes' Be My Baby.

He was also linked to the Beatles, producing their final album Let It Be.

Spector was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

On February 3, 2003, actress Lana Clarkson was killed in Spector's mansion in California.

Her body was found slumped in a chair with a single gunshot wound to her mouth with broken teeth scattered over the carpet.

He was first tried in 2007 and before a mistrial was declared.

In 2009, the case was brought again before a jury and he was found guilty and sentenced to 19 years.

At the time of his death, he was an inmate at the California Health Care Facility in California.
