Pharrell Willaims is the new creative director of Louis Vuitton

Pharrell Williams, a multi-talented singer-songwriter and philanthropist, has been chosen the new creative director of Louis Vuitton's menswear business, taking over for the late Virgil Abloh, the firm announced on Tuesday.

"Pharrell Williams is a visionary whose creative universes span from music, to art, to fashion," the luxury label said in a statement. "He has established himself as a cultural, global phenomenon over the past 20 years," it added.

The Wall Street Journal and Le Figaro were the first publications to report on the appointment.

The "Happy" singer has expertise working with upscale companies and designers like the late Karl Lagerfeld. She is a 13-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar nominee.

The appointment takes effect right away. The debut of Williams' line is slated to take place in June at Paris Men's Fashion Week.

Since Abloh's death from cancer in November 2021 at the age of 41, the position has remained unfilled. He was a trailblazing fashion designer and tastemaker recognised for fusing high couture and streetwear.

The brand continued to produce eye-catching men's shows after Abloh's passing, mostly without a creative director. Abloh, a DJ and the creator of the company Off-White, changed his title at Louis Vuitton from "designer" to "curator" as he broadened his interests to include home goods, jewellery, industrial design, and architecture.

In 2004 and 2008, Williams worked with the opulent conglomerate LVMH (Louis Vuitton Mot Hennessy). He collaborated with Chanel on a pair of enormously well-liked sneakers in 2017 and created a unisex clothing line with Lagerfeld in 2019. Additionally, he owns fashion labels including Icecream and Billionaire Boys Club.

Pietro Beccari, the new chairman and CEO of the company, said in a statement that "His creative vision beyond fashion will definitely take Louis Vuitton into a new and extremely exciting chapter."
