Pharrell, Shia LaBeouf, FKA twigs: 2014’s boldest style statements

Pharrell Williams

A great year for the musician who, after anaesthetising the planet with his song Happy, used the fame to strike a deal with Uniqlo to mass-produce T-shirts that read “The same is lame”. Kudos also for wearing the same Vivienne Westwood hat every day for six months even though it made him look a malnourished mountie.

Sandra from Gogglebox

Not only has she revived the kaftan, she singlehandedly created a market for rings shaped like aeroplanes. In the future, your great grandchildren – who will be androids – will marvel that no one had worn aviation-inspired finger jewellery before. You will say that if God had meant for fingers to fly, he would have given them wings.

Shia Labeouf

When he went to a film premiere with a paper bag on his head bearing the legend “I am not famous anymore” how was the Hollywood actor supposed to know he would end up getting so much attention? But he got so much attention that, like, he’s kinda famous all over again. Which is such great news for both him and his management!

Dapper Laughs

Nothing says “I am a serious artist who created a comic character and it was him that did all the rape stuff” like a black turtleneck. So when whatever-his-name-is wore one on Newsnight, not only did he save his TV career, he kicked off a new style. Now, nobody tries to fake contrition without a little rollneck on.

FKA Twigs

So cool, it hurts. That’s what people say about genre-blending, identity-challenging pop star FKA twigs. Curiously, it’s also what they say about Google Glass, especially after they’ve spent six hours squinting at a tiny screen in the corner of their eye. The former endorsed the latter this year: synergy.

Wiley

The grime ombudsman wrote another chapter in the history of style this year by appearing in the video for On A Level in a red shirt with a big black patch on the collar that said “Wicked”. He twinned it with a big white patch down the side of the buttons that said “Boys will be boys”. You expected the glue to wear off any minute, but it didn’t.

I like wearing brightly coloured cardboard (often old packaging from Bose noise-cancelling headphones), but also greaseproof paper. I think greaseproof paper could be REALLY BIG in 2015. It’s crinkly, and has an interesting effect on the skin, often causing welts and discolouration due to minor bruising. This can then look GREAT under clingfilm.

I predict a MAJOR comeback for socks next year. A wonderful designer I know, BING FINDINGO, predicts that the “two foot sock” – not a sock that is two-foot long, but a sock which contains two feet – will make a BIG impression. There’s a drawback in this, in that people will have to hop, rather than walk, but the effect is so spectacular that I think it will REALLY catch on.

I also predict that a lot of the population will start wearing wallpaper in 2015, especially since finding cheap accommodation in London is so difficult. Wearing wallpaper IMMEDIATELY makes one feel that one is inhabiting a small “retro” flat (like somewhere Mary Quant might have pitched up in when she first started out in the 60s). It really is a genuine alternative to having somewhere to live.

I think there will be a huge revolution in fabrics next year. A friend of mine always orders trout or salmon in restaurants, then carefully peels away the skin, and keeps it in her handbag. After it dries out, she turns the silvery skin into fabulous tops and T-shirts, often with hard-hitting SLOGANS pinpointing the DANGERS of GLOBALISATION.
