Peugeot workers protest in bid to save jobs

Workers from the Peugeot car plant in Coventry today began a weekend of demonstrations aimed at saving the 2,300 jobs that will be lost if the factory closes as planned next year.

Union members will stage events to keep the pressure on the French car-maker to keep the Ryton site open.

Peugeot claimed that the site was unprofitable, but unions said they had drawn up a plan that would save the site.

TGWU convener at the plant, Jim O'Boyle, said public support had been "magnificent", adding: "It is vital that we keep up the campaign so that everyone understands just what damage the closure would do car industry jobs and the rest of the economy of Coventry and the whole of the West Midlands."

Tony Woodley, the union's general secretary said: "The campaign by our members at Ryton deserves the full support of everyone who believes that Britain can still make the goods we need to secure our future."
