Peter Schmeichel names three priorities for prospective Manchester United owners

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has named Old Trafford, Carrington and the transfer budget as the prospective new owners' top priorities should they takeover.

This week has seen reports indicate INEOS' Sir Jim Ratcliffe is the Glazers' preferred bidder for United. It is understood Ratcliffe would undergo a clear out of the boardroom which would include the departure of chief executive Richard Arnold.

However, the Englishman's bid is believed to allow Joel and Avram Glazer to remain at United as minority stakeholders. The other main contender is Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani who is aiming for a full purchase of the club.

Reports suggest he would be seeking a full clear out of the board too but it would include the departure of Joel and Avram too. Publicly, it is not yet known which bid the Glazers prefer after the third round of the process ended in April.

Whoever takes over at the Theatre of Dreams has a big job on their hands though, according to Schmeichel. Speaking on BBC Sounds' How To Buy A Football Club podcast, the former goalkeeper said: "In many ways it's an interesting position that the club finds itself in.

"There are very big challenges ahead in the next couple of years that need to be addressed. The big one of course is the stadium which is to some degree run down.

"The training ground needs a very caring hand, if you like. Maybe even a new training ground. And of course, Erik ten Hag needs money to keep on building what he has began this season."

He added: "We don't know what's going to happen. We don't know if it's going to be worse or it's going to be better. I mean, we don't know anything. What we do know is that we need this to be resolved. We need to move on to the next phase. Because the longer it drags out, the harder it's going to be. And now is the moment."
