Peter Moores in talks to sign new long-term Nottinghamshire contract

Nottinghamshire have held positive discussions with Peter Moores over a new long-term contract.

The head coach is in the final 12 months of a three-year deal, which has seen Notts win two limited overs trophies and promotion to Division One of the County Championship under his tenure.

They are now engaged in talks with the 56-year-old and are hopeful of extending the former England coach’s stay at Trent Bridge.

Moores' staff of assistant coach Paul Franks, bowling coach Andy Pick and second team coach Ant Botha are all highly likely to stay on beyond the end of season.

Moores initially joined as a coaching consultant in June 2015 soon after leaving his England post.

He took over head coaching duties from Mick Newell the following September, after Notts were relegated from Division One.

His family were already settled in the area and son Tom is now an established member of the Notts team.

Should he sign a new deal, it would be a huge boost for the club, with Moores massively liked and respected by the squad. Players regularly cite him as the reason for signing, or best coach they have worked with.

Meanwhile, it has already been agreed Moores will be free to coach one of the teams in The Hundred tournament when it launches next summer, assuming he is still at Notts.

However, he will it has been decided he will not be in charge of the East Midlands side based at Trent Bridge.

At present, the chief executives of Notts, Leicestershire and Derbyshire are leading the process of forming the new team with little information known publicly about it at this stage, including what its name will be.

Former Notts star Stephen Fleming has been linked with the role, but no formal talks have taken place with any potential candidates.

However, a long list of contenders is likely to be presented for consideration in the next week or two.

Former New Zealand international Fleming, who played for Notts between 2005 and 2007, is the current head coach of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

Ex-Lancashire coach Moores has been linked with the coach's job at the Old Trafford based team in The Hundred.
