It’s been a wild night in federal politics, and things have just gone from bad to straight up terrible for Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton. The ABC has already projected that Dutton has lost his Queensland seat of Dickson to Labor’s Ali France.
With just under a third of the vote counted, Labor is ahead on first preferences. There’s been a big swing towards Labor in Dickson, and after three attempts, Ali France is set to become the new member for the seat.

Dutton’s loss is a huge moment — he held Dickson by just 1.7 per cent heading into the election, making it the most marginal seat for any Opposition Leader since 1937. Throughout the campaign, Labor had been targeting Dickson, and tonight their effort has paid off.
Speaking just after 9:30pm on Saturday, Dutton conceded the election, accepting “full responsibility” for the loss.
Dutton confirmed he has spoken with Albanese and congratulated him on his achievements in a rare display of comradery between the party leaders.
“Earlier, I called out the Prime Minister to congratulate him on his success tonight. It is an historic occasion for the Labor Party and we recognise that,” he said.
“I congratulated the Prime Minister and wished he Jodie and Nathan all the very best and I said to the Prime Minister that his mother would be incredibly proud of his achievement tonight and he should be proud of what he has achieved.”
He also congratulated Labor’s Ali France, who defeated him in the seat of Dickson.
“I also had the pleasure of speaking with Ali France, Ali and I have been combatants for a number of elections but she was successful in Dickson tonight, and she will do a good job as a local member,” he said.
“She lost her son Henry which is a tragic circumstances and no parent should ever go through that, equally I said to Ali that her son Henry would be incredibly proud of her tonight and she will do a good job as a local member for Dickson and I wish her all the very best.”
Dutton went on to thank other members of his party, his family, his team, and the people of Dickson.
The opposition leader handled his defeat with grace, all things considered.
“Our Liberal family is hurting across the country tonight, including in my electorate of Dickson and I want to say thank you very much to all of them,” he began his speech.
“Our amazing people, dedicated to their country. Ultimately we live in the best country in the world and I have always believed that and I always will.
I love this country and have fought hard for it, we have been defined by our opponents in this election which is not a true story of who we are but we will rebuild from here and we will do that because we know our values, we know our beliefs, and we will always stick to them.
“I want to say thank you to the Australian people for the faith that they have placed in me, and thank them for the great honour of having been the member for Dickson, and the Leader of the Opposition.”
This result means the Coalition will now be looking for a new leader, as Dutton’s defeat caps off a tough night for the Liberals who have lost the 2025 federal election to the Labor Party.
Albanese is expected to give his victory speech shortly.
