Peter Beardsley charged with using racist and abusive language at Newcastle

Peter Beardsley has been charged by the FA for using racist and abusive language towards players while Newcastle Under-23 boss.

The 58-year-old left Newcastle this month after an investigation was launched into alleged racism and bullying.

Mirror Sport revealed last January that the ex-England forward was being investigated by club chiefs after complaints made by former U23 winger Yasin Ben El-Mhanni in 2017.

An FA statement read: "Peter Beardsley has been charged with three breaches of FA Rule E3.

"It is alleged Mr Beardsley used abusive and/or insulting words towards Newcastle United FC Under 23 players, which were contrary to FA Rule E3(1), whilst employed as their coach.

"It is further alleged these words also constituted an ‘Aggravated Breach’, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as they included reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race and/or nationality.

"He has until Friday 12 April 2019 to provide a response."

Several other academy players also made claims against Beardsley, who was accused of of conducting a sustained campaign designed to humiliate El-Mhanni.

Last year, an independent appeal found that Beardsley had made discriminatory comments and that his treatment of the player was "generally unfair".

Beardsley has consistently denied the charges, and confirmed he was leaving Newcastle to "seek a new challenge".

He said: "I have always honoured my contractual obligations of confidentiality to the club and maintained my silence, which has in itself been very difficult.

"I am incredibly grateful for the tremendous support I have received and I look forward to the future."

The former England forward's career saw him enjoy spells with Newcastle while he also played for Liverpool and Everton and featured at two World Cups.
