Peru earthquake: Large 7.3 magnitude tremors hit South American country

Peru has been struck by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake, with buildings seen shaking in dramatic video.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the quake's epicentre is about 28 miles north of Barranca.

It was at a depth of 80 kilometres, it added..

Footage taken during the quake shows dust being thrown up as buildings swayed, with loose bricks falling to the street.

The quake was felt by people living in neighbouring Ecuador, according to the EMSC's website.

One person wrote on the site: "Felt quite strong in Loja, Ecuador. Light stuff fell."

Another said they had felt a "strong and long tremor".

A witness in Ecuador wrote: "I was lying in bed when the bed began to shake.

"After a few seconds I realized it was an earthquake and began counting...it lasted for about 57 seconds and there were a few moments when the shaking became stronger.

" It felt like a back and forth motion, but, amazingly, nothing fell off shelves or table."

Walter Culqui, mayor of the town of Jalca Grande in Chachapoyas province, said several houses had been damaged,
leaving three non-serious injuries. Part of the church tower in the area collapsed, he said.

No tsunami warning has been issued in the aftermath of the quake.

The area where the quake struck is sparsely populated, although it was felt in capital city Lima.
