Perth primary school kids show their caring side

Pupils from a Perth primary school have donated much-needed food items to a local charity.

Tulloch’s P2 and P3 classes have been focussing on “our community" this term and, with help from their parents, decided to organise a collection for the Perth and Kinross Foodbank.

Class teacher Lauren Cowan explained: “A representative from the organisation came to the school to talk to the children about its role in the community.

“That led to a group of parents helping to deliver two car-loads of food to their premises in Perth’s Cutlog Vennel.”

Mrs Cowan added: “It was an excellent opportunity for the pupils to help and support their local community.

“We had a fantastic response from the parents who then donated food and helped us deliver it.”

Pupil Eva Band, from P2C, said: “The class loved it because we got to see where the food bank is and how they help people.”

Eleanor Kelleher, Perth Foodbank co-ordinator, told last month’s annual meeting of Perth Citizens’ Advice Bureau of the challenges it was facing.

In 2013, when they opened, volunteers fed just over 1400 people but last year the figure had increased to more than 5000, a 17 per cent rise over the previous 12 months.

“We are unusual for a charity in that our aim is to close our doors,” she said.

“But due to a yearly increase in demand for our services, we now give out more than we take in.”

Most people who use the service, based in premises next to Perth Theatre, have been hit by delays in their benefits or sudden changes to their financial status.
