2 dead, 7 wounded in shootings in Chicago since Tuesday

July 08--Two people were killed and seven others wounded in shootings on the West and South sides of Chicago from Tuesday through early Wednesday, police said.

A 25-year-old man was found shot several times on the sidewalk in the 3200 block of West Huron Street around 2:10 a.m. Wednesday, according to Officer Hector Alfaro, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Alfaro said he was shot in the face and body. No one was in custody.

The other fatal shooting occurred in the South Chicago neighborhood. The man killed became the fifth victim of gun violence in that neighborhood in 16 hours.

The man was in the 2000 block of East 79th Street around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday when he was shot in the chest and abdomen, according to Officer Ana Pacheco, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Other shootings Tuesday:

--An 18-year-old man was shot in the shoulder around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. He told police he was walking in the 4200 block of West Washington Boulevard when he was shot. He walked into Rush University Medical Center, where he was treated.

--A 63-year-old man was shot in the 9400 block of South Racine Avenue in the Brainerd neighborhood at 10:35 p.m. when three people attempted to rob him, said Alfaro said.

The man was shot in the leg and right hip as he fled after the robbery, Alfaro said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.

--Earlier, two men were wounded around 9:45 p.m. in the 5900 block of South Lafayette Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood, Alfaro said.

A 28-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, and a 25-year-old man was shot in the upper chest, Alfaro said. They were taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, Alfaro said.

--About 9:25 p.m., a 43-year-old woman was wounded in the 4300 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood, Alfaro said.

The woman was sitting in a parked car when someone came up and shot her, Alfaro said. She suffered a graze wound to her neck and drove to Mercy Hospital, where her condition was stabilized.

--At 6:30 p.m., a man was wounded in the 2400 block of West Marquette Road in the Marquette Park neighborhood, according to Officer Thomas Sweeney, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.

The 20-year-old man suffered a wound to the arm and was taken to Advocate Christ, where his condition was stabilized, Sweeney said, citing preliminary reports.

--Shortly after 1 p.m., a 27-year-old man was shot in the 7300 block of Jeffery Boulevard in the South Shore neighborhood, according to Officer Veejay Zala, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.

Preliminary reports indicate the man was on the corner arguing with two other men when one of them pulled out a weapon and fired, police said. The man was shot in the abdomen and was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Zala said.

In the South Chicago neighborhood, five people have been shot over 16 hours since late Monday afternoon.

About 5:30 p.m. Monday, a 16-year-old and another boy, 17, were in the 7900 block of South Merrill Avenue when a gunman opened fire. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other youth was taken in serious condition to South Shore Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back, police said.

About two hours later, two men were shot in the back about five blocks away in the 7900 block of South Bennett Avenue, police said.

A 23-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ, and a 25-year-old was taken to Jackson Park Hospital.

No one was reported to be in custody in any of the attacks.
