A PERSON has died after being struck by a train near a Greenock railway station on Saturday, police have confirmed.
Emergency crews rushed to Branchton station at around 3:30pm on Saturday, July 5, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
The incident led to the closure of the line between Wemyss Bay and Port Glasgow for much of Saturday afternoon while police, paramedics and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service staff were in attendance.
British Transport Police have now confirmed the sad news that the person involved in the incident was pronounced dead at the scene.
They say the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
A spokesperson said: “We were called to Branchton station shortly after 3.30pm on Saturday, July 5 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Officers attended, along with paramedics, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal."
Disruption on the line continued until 7.45pm on Saturday.
