Perplexity’s Comet Wants to Replace Tabs with Thought

Perplexity has launched Comet. A web browser, but unlike regular ones, it’s not meant to only navigate the internet. It will understand and think with you. Today, the majority of browsers rely on a decades-old model of tabs and links. Comet is an AI-native browser and positions itself as a cognitive partner, aiming to close the gap between curiosity and action.

From Browsing to “Thinking Out Loud”

Unlike traditional browsers that offer a passive window to the web, Comet comes with a model where the browser participates in the user’s intent. Instead of manually toggling between tabs, apps, and notes, Comet offers a unified interface powered by an assistant that holds context and follows your line of thought.

The browser doesn’t just respond to queries; it’s designed to anticipate next steps. Need to compare a product you’re reading about to others? Ask. Need a summary of a long article or a counterpoint to what you’re reading? Just highlight. Curious about a concept? According to the company, Comet is built to break it down and follow your curiosity without breaking your flow.

Perplexity is marketing Comet as more than a search companion. It’s a full-stack assistant that can execute tasks like booking meetings, drafting emails, and making purchases, all based on the context of your browsing session.

Apart from that, the company is treating curiosity as a feature, and not just as a human trait. It allows you to highlight text anywhere for instant explanations, follow tangents without losing context, and ask exploratory questions without rigid query structures.

Rollout and Availability

For now, Comet is available to Perplexity Max subscribers via an invite-only waitlist. The gradual onboarding is set to take place over the summer. New users will also get a limited number of invites to bring others into the fold.
