Pep Guardiola sends Harry Kane message as Man City lose Premier League classic against Tottenham

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola moved to praise Tottenham striker Harry Kane for his performance during Saturday’s Premier League loss to Antonio Conte’s side.

Guardiola was keen on bringing the England captain to the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2021, seeing bids rejected by Spurs as Kane agitated for a move.

Still, he ultimately stayed in North London and played a huge part in securing a famous win for the away side on Saturday evening, scoring twice in a dramatic 3-2 win.

It had been a difficult season for Kane up until that point and the lack of a pre-season, caused in part by both the transfer speculation and England’s run to the Euro 2020 final, has been obvious since the start of this campaign.

On Saturday, however, the 28-year-old looked back to his best and equaled the Premier League record for the most prolific partnership with teammate Heung-min Son with 36 direct goal involvements between the two.

“It [signing Kane] was never an option,” said Guardiola.

“Everyone knows we were interested but it was not an option. Forget it, it’s in the past.

“It’s not necessary to show the goals he scored tonight to show his quality on the ball, all the UK knows it.”
