Pep Guardiola has revealed why he left Phil Foden out of his starting line-up against Lyon - claiming he wanted to play every striker he had.

Manchester City booked their place in the knockout stage of the Champions League with a 2-2 draw in France.

Despite being without the injured Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan, Guardiola still named 18-year-old Foden on the bench.

But explaining his decision, he said he wanted to overwhelm Lyon with his attack.

Raheem Sterling started in midfield, with Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane and Riyad Mahrez all named up front.

"I decided for another player,” said Guardiola, when about Foden and his pre-match comments that the teenager was ready to start. “Everybody here is ready, but I imagine to play this game it would be hard.

“Every game I make mistakes. I came here to show we wanted to win and I put on all the strikers that we have."

Maxwel Cornet twice put Lyon ahead in the second half, but goals from Aymeric Laporte and Aguero ensured City progressed to last 16 for the sixth year in succession.

Guardiola added: “Being here is a huge success. People say it's not enough - but we have made an incredible, amazing achievement for us.

“Now it's time to enjoy it and hope we can arrive in February in the best condition."
