Pep Guardiola gives Sergio Aguero update after Man City win over Burnley

Pep Guardiola said that Sergio Aguero could return to Manchester City training as early as Sunday despite missing the Premier League win over Burnley.

It has been a struggle to get the Argentine striker on the pitch all season and having returned from a five-month layoff in October he pulled up in his third game back. Aguero played the final minutes of the midweek win over Olympiacos but was not deemed fit enough to make the squad three days later.

Guardiola played down the extent of the problem in his broadcast interviews after the Burnley game, saying that the player wasn't injured and could be back soon. In his press conference, the manager elaborated on how the 32-year-old still needs to be eased back to full fitness as the knee problem that kept him out for so much of this year continues to give him problems.

"With Sergio it depends on how he wakes up. He made good training sessions but then had some niggles in his knee," he said.

"It is day-by-day and yesterday I decided not to select him because he needs training and this morning he woke up with a little problem in his knee and he could not train.

"We know that the injury that he had is not easy for the recovery and we have to handle it as well as possible and when he will be ready he will start to train with us and play."
