Pep Guardiola could end Sir Alex Ferguson debate with legacy-cementing treble win

If Pep Guardiola completes the Treble in Istanbul, and goes on to win a fourth title in a row next season, we need to have a serious conversation.

He is already the finest coach we've ever welcomed in the Premier League, but would that also make him the greatest manager of all time in English football ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson?

‌Victory against Inter in the Champions League final would mean Pep has basically won it all for Manchester City in seven years – including the European Cup, the holy grail.

‌This is the one City want to win. This is the reason they brought Guardiola to the Etihad. This is the reason they brought in Erling Haaland as goalscorer supreme.

‌It is fair to say Pep started from a much higher base than Fergie when he walked through the door.

‌City had already won titles under Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini when he arrived in 2016, and Guardiola won nothing in his first season at the club.

‌Sir Alex took over an under-achieving giant listing in mid-table when he arrived at Old Trafford in 1986. His first game was a 1-1 draw at Oxford United, and it was three-and-a-half years before he delivered the first of his 25 mainstream trophies, the FA Cup, in 1990.

‌It's probably fairer to compare Pep's first seven years at City over the same 'window' of the Ferguson era at Manchester United, starting with 1994-5 when they missed out on the title to Blackburn on the last day and finished the season empty-handed.

Have Your Say! Is Guardiola the greatest manager of all time? Tell us what you think here.

‌Their records are remarkably similar – five titles each – except United won the Treble in 1999, a feat Guardiola can match this weekend.

‌In my lifetime, only Bob Paisley at Liverpool (six titles, three European Cups, a UEFA Cup and three League Cups between 1975-83) can hold a candle to Guardiola and Ferguson over a similar period.

‌If City were playing Inter in a group match now, I would expect them to win easily. And if they get on the front foot early, as they did against Real Madrid in the semi-finals, it could be the most one-sided final since AC Milan destroyed Barcelona 4-0 in 1994... with Guardiola in the beaten Barca side.

‌But if Inter score first, it could be a difficult night. I fear they would try to disrupt the game with niggling fouls, gamesmanship, theatrics and so-called 'game management' as Roma and Fiorentina did in the two other European club finals.

‌I am not qualified to say Pep got it wrong two years ago, when City lost 1-0 against Chelsea in Porto. And it could have been a different outcome if Antonio Rudiger had been sent off for a poor challenge which left Kevin de Bruyne with a facial injury.

‌But his decision to leave both Rodri and Fernandinho on the bench backfired.

‌I would be very surprised if he did not start with the same XI as last weekend's FA Cup final, bar Ederson returning in goal.

‌That would be harsh on the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Rico Lewis to be left on the bench, but Guardiola appears to have settled on his strongest team.

‌And even if they lost De Bruyne again, Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan are playing so well that City would be well-equipped to prosper without him.

‌So, for me, I can't see anything stopping Manchester City landing the Treble in Istanbul.

‌And after that, the only question mark is this: If Pep stays at City for 26 years, as Fergie did at United, how many trophies will he win?

‌With 11 in the bank already, it could run into dozens.
