People urged to get fourth jab as 'flurona' spreads across UK

Health experts are urging people in the UK to get two different types of jabs - one for flu and three for Covid in order to reduce the spread of 'flurona'.

Flurona refers to when people being infected with both the flu and coronavirus at the same time.

The UK Health and Security Agency has reported more than 160 cases of people being infected with both the flu and coronavirus simultaneously.

Public Health England reported at the beginning of the pandemic that people infected with both viruses are twice as likely to die as a result.

Nottinghamshire Live reports that getting vaccinated for both illnesses was discussed during a board meeting at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust.

Lucy Hubber, Nottingham's public health director, said: "We've been concerned all along with how Covid might interact with other, particularly infectious diseases.

"We know that people who have other underlying conditions, particularly those that affect their immunity or affect their respiratory system, are more at risk of serious illness with Covid.

"As we are in flu season then there is clearly a risk there. What we know is that the flu vaccine is effective and the Covid vaccine is effective.

"But we are not seeing a significant problem with the comorbidity at the moment but it is really important, particularly for the more vulnerable groups, they take the opportunity to get vaccinated."
