People on the move: top North East appointments and promotions of the week

Newcastle-based property firm The Hanro Group has announced senior appointments as it looks to develop and expand its investment and development operations.

Newcastle University graduate Gagan Jagpal has been recruited as portfolio manager, bringing more than seven years’ commercial property experience to the role.

Mr Jagpal, who joins the firm from Cushman & Wakefield, will work alongside Laura Lloyd, who steps-up to take on new responsibilities as head of portfolio, and Iain Rollingson, head of property management.

Managing director Adam Serfontein said: “We are very pleased to welcome Gagan to The Hanro Group. Gagan has already established an excellent reputation in the property sector and will be an important addition as we expand our presence across the region and build on our reputation for portfolio management and delivering innovative and sustainable development projects.”

Black and White (B&W) Engineering has appointed a global HR director to further develop its people and culture strategy.

Based at the Newcastle office, Rachel Ovington has over 15 years of experience in HR and talent development and joins B&W from KP Snacks, where she has spent the last four years leading the corporate and commercial HR team for the UK as head of HR and business partner to the KP executive team.

Steven Horn, director at B&W Engineering, said: “Bringing Rachel on board will enable us to progress and enhance our holistic HR function ensuring we are supporting and developing our people to be at their best, in a way that’s tailored to both personal and business needs.

“Although we’re a global company, we’re very much one team who share the same mindset and the same values.”

Healthcare marketing communication specialists Onyx Health has expanded with six new additions.

The new starters include Alison Davies as associate director, and Sarah Walton as account director. Daniel Watts joins as a senior design manager and Lynsey Carr as senior designer.

The agency has also made two new junior appointments, Erica Wilhelmina as a graduate designer and Vanessa Neo as an account executive.

Managing director Karen Winterhalter said: “At Onyx Health, we have continued to grow our international client portfolio work in 2022. We have expanded our creative and communications teams to reflect our global focus as an agency. In the wake of the pandemic, a lot of communication activity has moved online and developing digital content that stands out in a crowded marketplace is essential for our clients.”

Michael Robinson, associate director, Howarth Litchfield (Howarth Lichfield)

Durham-based architects Howarth Litchfield have promoted Michael Robinson to the role of associate director.

Mr Robinson joined Howarth Litchfield in 1991 as a trainee architectural technologist and studied part time to acquire ONC and HNC qualifications, progressing to senior architectural technologist. He then went back to university part time and acquired a first-class BSc in architectural technology.

He is currently working on several projects for Stockton Borough Council including a new £7.1m teaching block and a £3.5m extension and alteration to a pupil referral unit along with other public sector projects at Derwentside College and Newbiggin Sports and Community Centre.

Managing director Jonathan Yates said: “Progression to associate director is another positive step for Michael and recognition of the hard work and commitment he has invested in the practice since he began working here. We are delighted to reward his dedication with this promotion and look forward to further collaborating with him as we continue to expand the team and work in new areas.”

DPP Planning has announced its latest set of promotions, across three of its five offices.

The Newcastle headquartered independent urban planning consultancy has promoted a Nicola Crowley, based in the Newcastle office, to principal planner. She joined DPP in 2015 as an assistant planner, progressing to planner two years later before taking to the role of senior planner in 2019.

In that time she has worked on a number of successful high profile planning applications including the transformational Milburngate in Durham, Newcastle’s tallest building, Hadrian’s Tower and the Brett Wharf residential scheme in Gateshead.

Elsewhere Oliver Corbett has been promoted to principal planner at the Leeds office and Freya Rideout has been promoted to planner in Cardiff.

Newcastle based media agency Route has made four new appointments.

The media-buying specialists have won a series of national clients accounts in the built environment, triggering the recruitment of Martyn King, SEO account director and Sarah Thomas, paid social media manager.

Molly-Ann Hughes, account executive and Lewis Wallwork, data apprentice, will support clients and the company as demand for services increases across its three key sectors.

Darren Davidson, who founded the firm with business partner Ben Dascombe, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Martyn, Sarah, Molly-Ann and Lewis to our growing team. It is important that we invest in the right mix of skills and new talent to continue to deliver our multi-channel award-winning work.”
