People fuming over plans to turn Victorian tea rooms into late night bar

People are not happy with plans to turn a Victorian tea shop into a late-night drinking venue.

An application submitted to Sefton Council 's licensing committee would see the former Tiffins Tea Rooms on Bold Street in Southport transformed into 'Paul's Bar'.

Applicant Paul Roach wants the bar to open 11am-12.30am, seven days a week (with permission to sell alcohol from 11am until midnight).

But some people who live nearby have objected to the proposals.

A number of residents have written letters to Sefton Council, pleading for the licence to be refused.

One person wrote: "[Bath Street] has lots of personal dwellings that already have to deal with increasing noise from bars locally. The no drinking zone doesn't seem to deter people.

"A lot of Southport 's tourists are the older generation that need places to stay where they will not be disturbed by drunken noise.

"The older generation are the ones that support the local restaurants and often come out of season to the guest houses which are mainly on Bath Street. I do not want to be kept awake by the extra noise.

"I have witnessed several fights recently started by drunken 'locals' and the season hasn't even started yet."

Another said opening times would be detrimental to the living conditions of nearby properties, writing: "Residents in the area have had their possessions vandalised.

"Some have had drunk people uproot gardens and flowers while others have had their cars vandalised in the early hours by drunk people. What will be done to try and prevent this from happening?"

A third suggested a new bar at this location could lead to an increase in anti-social behaviour , along with noise and people drinking in the street.

The licensing application is set to be decided upon at a meeting at Bootle Town Hall on Tuesday (July 16)
