While they are a controversial side dish, Christmas is the time the humble Brussel sprout gets to shine - and whether they deserve a place at the table is a debate that plagues households every year.
Now further fuel has been added to the fire as people are dumbfounded to learn that they have been saying the wrong name for the vegetable.
With the big day just around the corner, social media has been flooded with tips to make the best Christmas feast, from juicy turkey to crispy roasties.
But festive fans have been thrown into a tizzy after learning that there is another proper name for sprouts. The mind blowing news was made public on social media, the Mirror reports.
Taking to Twitter, one person shared: "Apparently, it's actually 'Brussels sprout' and not 'Brussel sprouts'." This came as a shock to other users, with one saying that their 'whole life has been a lie' after finding out the truth about the divisive green.
Others rejected the idea completely, arguing that it "hurts to say it the other way." Another Twitter user described the news as 'crushing', adding: "All these years you've been lied to. Ugh."
While most people in the Twitter thread were utterly baffled by the mishap, a select few were offended that people were only just realising how to pronounce Brussels sprouts as adults.
One scathed: "Does every single person in these replies also think the region in Belgium is called Brussel?"
While it might roll off the tongue more naturally to say Brussel sprouts, you'd be doing the vegetable an injustice, as it did in fact originate from Brussels in Belgium and dates way back to the 17th century.
The revelation comes as people have also admitted to having no idea that a Nutcracker actually has a purpose - as they assumed that the little soldiers were merely for decorative purposes.
It might seem incredibly obvious to some of us, but many people were under the belief that a Nutcracker soldier was purely something nice to look at.
So it's true purpose has come as a surprise to many, even though it's very clearly in the name - yes, nutcrackers, shockingly, are actually used to crack nuts.
This went over many peoples' heads as they have headed to social media to express their surprise after finding out the true function of nutcrackers.
"Nutcrackers are actually used to crack nuts… I was today years old," tweeted one confused person.
Meanwhile, another wrote: "You're telling me that nutcrackers can actually crack nuts?' -Me, Thanksgiving 2022".
