Pensioner dies after being hit by lorry on Scots high street

An 83-year-old man who was hit by a lorry on a Scots high street earlier on Monday has died of his injuries, police have said.

The pensioner was struck by a heavy goods vehicle on Lanark High Street shortly before 3pm on July 3. Emergency crews descended on the scene in the South Lanarkshire town at around 2.50pm.

Images from the scene show police, fire and ambulance crews in attendance, with the street closed in both directions to traffic. Glasgow Live reports that the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say enquiries into the fatality are ongoing. The road has since partially re-opened, with some diversions still in place.

In a post on social media, the Lanark Independent Business Group said: "It appears with sad regret that a gentleman has lost his life as a result of a traffic accident on the High Street. Deepest sympathies to his family and friends."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 2.50pm on Monday, 3 July, officers received a report of a crash involving a lorry and pedestrian on High Street, Lanark.

"Emergency services attended, and an 83-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The road has partially re-opened, with some diversions in place, and enquiries remain ongoing."
