A 78-year-old pensioner is fighting for his life after being hit by a car in east London.

Police were called to the collision between a car and the elderly pedestrian on Barking Road in Newham around 1.30am on Sunday.

The man was rushed to hospital, where officers say he is in a “critical condition”. The driver of the car is helping police with their enquiries.

Launching an appeal, Detective Constable Liz Carrey, from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said officers were wanting to track down a driver who stopped to let the man cross the road moments before the collision.

She said: “An elderly man remains in a critical condition as a result of this collision.

“We are working hard to establish exactly what happened and we think the public could have information that could help our investigation.

“We know that a white saloon car stopped to let the man cross the road just prior to the collision taking place.

“It is really important that we track the driver of this car down as they may have vital information for our investigation.

“We also need to speak to anybody who witnessed this collision but has not yet spoken to police. I would also ask motorists who were in this area to check their dashcam footage to see if they may have captured this incident.”

There have been no arrests, said police.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage is being asked to call police on 101 or the collision line is 020 8597 4874 and give reference Cad 604/01May.
