Pelicans provide update on Zion Williamson, no return date set

The New Orleans Pelicans provided an update on Zion Williamson’s status on Wednesday afternoon. After leaving the bubble to tend to an urgent family matter last week, Williamson has continued daily testing for COVID-19 with each result coming back negative.

However, the team and Williamson does not yet have a date set for his return, though Williamson is still expected to rejoin the team at some point.

Here is the full release from the Pelicans:

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson, who departed the NBA campus in Orlando last week to attend to an urgent family matter, has been getting tested daily for COVID-19 while away from the team and continues to produce negative results. While there is no current timetable for his return to campus, he fully intends to rejoin the team. Per NBA protocol, his quarantine period will be determined upon his return. Further updates will be provided accordingly.

The exact amount of time Williamson will have to quarantine is not yet known as the NBA appears to be taking each situation on a case-by-case basis. However, the continual daily testing for Williamson will drastically reduce the required quarantine time, likely bringing it much closer to a four-day quarantine versus a 10- or 14-day quarantine.

The Pelicans begin scrimmage play on Wednesday against Brooklyn. The first official game will be on July 30 against the Utah Jazz.
