Sunday marked the 50th anniversary of the introduction of a pedestrian mall to one of the main streets in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district.
For the first time since its opening in 1970, passage through the pedestrian mall was banned for about 2-1/2 months due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Even after the area was reopened to the walking public, items such as parasols, tables and benches no longer line the street as part of infection prevention measures.
"We're so proud to have been able to have a place here for 50 years," said Eriko Takezawa, secretary general of the Ginza Street Association. "As the term "Ginbura [strolling around Ginza]" suggests, this district is a fun place to enjoy a stroll. We hope that this will continue to be the case in the future."
