Peaky Blinders star Toby Kirkup's final days before dying alone after hospital discharge

Peaky Blinders star Toby Kirkup died alone just hours after he was discharged from hospital an inquest heard.

The actor, 48, who also starred in Emmerdale, sought medical advice after suffering from chest pains on August 29 2020.

However after being diagnosed with gastritis, Toby was sent home.

Sadly the star's condition deteriorated and he began vomiting before suffering a cardiac arrest.

A post-mortem established Toby's death was the result of natural causes after a ruptured aortic arch aneurysm.

During the inquest assistant coroner Ian Pears read out a statement from Toby's brother Dominic and mother Pamela at Bradford Coroner's Court.

They said they had last seen the actor a week before his death at Dominic's hotel in Torquay and he was "excited about the future and positive. On his last visit, he looked really well."

However the inquest was also told that on August 18, 11 days before his death, Toby celebrated his birthday, "making use of recreational drugs and alcohol,"

Coroners officer Catherine Toner told assistant coroner, Katy Dickinson, during the inquest that the actor had been dealing with drug and alcohol related issues.

However in a statement from the family, read at the virtual hearing, Toby was said to have started to use drink and drugs while at university, but had been "clean" since going to a rehab facility in South Africa almost 10 years before his death.

The star's family wanted a coroner to investigate his death because they believed he had been "wrongly diagnosed" and that the focus had been on his stomach pain rather than chest pain.

But Dr Palin told the hearing an electrocardiogram and additional tests did not change his opinion that the most likely cause of Toby's pain was gastritis.

He said: “I didn’t know anything about any prior drug use apart from that which the gentleman told me himself.”

Assistant coroner Ian Pears today also said he is "not at all critical" of a hospital's decision to discharge the actor only hours before his death.

He said: "It is one of those things where, unfortunately, the condition has then ruptured and become a terminal event."

Toby studied drama at the University of Huddersfield and had worked as a writer, TV presenter and actor for five years before his death.

He played the part of a police officer in Peaky Blinders in 2016 and also starred in Emmerdale as well as Channel 4 ’s historical drama The Mill.

Tributes paid to Toby following his death described the actor as "always pleasant, polite and friendly" and "always lovely to speak to."
