Peaky Blinders fans notice cinematic parallel between Tommy's first and final appearance

After almost a decade of Peaky Blinders wrapped up last night in a monumental finale. Dedicated fans of the series tuned in to watch the end of an era unfold at 9pm on BBC One on Sunday, April 3.

Not everything is over, though, as several of the show's beloved key characters are set to appear in the Peaky Blinders feature film, which is set to go into production next year. But whilst fans wait for the highly-anticipated film to be made, all they can do is rewatch the past series, and become obsessed with the Peaky Blinders story all over again.

Eagle-eyed fans of the show, through the heartbreak of the treasured series ending, were able to draw comparisons between the first episode which aired all the way back in 2013, and last night's finale. For those who have not yet watched the finale, it is probably best if you click away now, as one spoiler is about to be lightly unpacked.

Of course, Peaky Blinders would not be Peaky Blinders without Tommy Shelby, and last night saw the main character's goodbye. The meaningful finale saw Tommy plan on ending his life before changing his mind.

Rather than laying inside his burning funeral trailer, Tommy decided to ride away from it on a white horse through the countryside. Tommy's choice to ride away from the scene was poignant to viewers, who drew comparisons between last night's scene and one from the first-ever episode of the series.

In the first episode of series one, Tommy makes his first appearance riding in on a black horse, which fans suggested is reflective of his dark personality at that point in the show. His choice of steed in the first episode contrasts significantly with the white horse he disappears on in the finale, which suggests he is now a completely different man.

One viewer observed: "Started on a black horse foreshadowing Tommy in season 1 finished on a white horse foreshadowing the new Tommy Shelby.

Another fan of the show, Ben Nicholson, added extra detail: "Also shot the white horse in season 1 for being cursed, and now he’s back in a white horse when everyone said he is cursed"

However, the symbolism of the white horse has been debated by fans since last night's finale. Stephen said: "Death rides a white horse. It's not necessarily the redemptive image that everyone seems to think it is."

Sometimes, the finale of a long-running show can be disappointing, but it seems that most viewers were very pleased with the ending of Peaky Blinders. Described as 'beautiful', 'emotional', and 'brilliant' by fans, it's safe to say a lot of people were touched by the finale, and cannot wait for the film to come out.
