‘Peacemaker’ just erased the DECU in the funniest way possible

Season 2 of Peacemaker premiered and the show took a big swing by throwing Chris Smith into the DCU without any kind of flare. Meaning that the way they erased the DCEU is so simple it is hilarious.

**Spoilers for the season 2 premiere of Peacemaker lie ahead**
Like any great television show, season 2 is Peacemaker opened with a recap. After all, it has been a minute since we saw Chris Smith (John Cena) back in action. But that recap ended up changing what is and isn’t cannon in the newly minted DCU in the funniest way possible: By straight up erasing it from the DCEU.

If you recall, the end of the first season had Chris angry with the Justice League for their lack of help. When they do finally show up, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash make comments to each other but Chris and his team walk away. That’s not how season 2 of Peacemaker remembers it.

In the recap, which does state that it is “previously in the DCU,” Chris interacts with the Justice Gang and it is Hawk Girl (Isabela Merced) and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) are the ones who have to deal with Chris’ anger.

That is about it. That is our explanation of the DCU vs. the DCEU takes on the character of Peacemaker as we head into season 2 and it is perfect. That’s all I need, to be honest. For characters that did work in the DCEU, why not just throw them into this newly formed universe with a “previously on” and call it a day?

Now, let’s do it with Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie in Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
(Warner Bros.)

My feelings on some of the DCEU aside, I do think that some casting was perfect. Like Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and basically the entire movie Birds of Prey. If they wanted to give me a sequel and just say “JK it’s been the DCU the entire time,” I would suspend my disbelief because it all worked for me back in 2020 when the movie came out.

Look, I don’t think everyone from the DCEU deserves a return but some characters ruled. Like Harley. And to see Robbie on screen with a Poison Ivy would heal us as a world, you know?

Point is: I like that this is now setting a precedent moving forward. If Peter Safran and James Gunn want to bring a character into the DCU from the DCEU, they literally just have to do a throwaway line that connects them back to what the previously on for Peacemaker did and I think that is so smart!

I don’t know if this means that our beloved Chris Smith is 100% the one from Superman‘s universe, I would have to go and compare the scene from the 2025 movie with the first episode of season 2 but I also don’t care if this is how they made Peacemaker canon.

We don’t have to over complicated merging universes and changing of the guards. We can, like Peacemaker did, have fun with it.
