Paul Scholes identifies transfer that would have made 'big difference' to Man Utd

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United should have gone all out for Christian Eriksen.

United appeared as potential suitors for Eriksen towards the end of the transfer window as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considered late business.

Eriksen had gone public with his desire to leave Tottenham with Real Madrid tipped to make a move, but he will begin the season in north London.

United legend Scholes admits he would have loved the Dane to join his former club.

"I was quite excited when Christian Eriksen got mentioned," Scholes told Robbie Savage's Premier League Breakfast.

"He could have made a big difference to United in the way De Bruyne plays for City, creating chances and scoring goals.

"But they haven't got that and they have some good players so the target is top four and I think they will make it."

United sold Romelu Lukaku on deadline day to Inter Milan and despite links to the likes of Mario Mandzukic, Paulo Dybala and Inaki Williams, they failed to replace him.

And Scholes is concerned United may well come up short in that position over the course of the season.

"It is a worry for me, the centre-forward position," the former midfielder added.

"They have got players like Rashford and Martial, Greenwood, but are they really No.9s?

"We have to wait and see. I think they are flipping between being a wide player and being a centre forward.

"They are yet to prove they can score 25-30 goals a season."
