Paul Scholes explains what Victor Lindelof did wrong for Manchester United vs Southampton

Paul Scholes highlighted Victor Lindelof's poor stoppage time defending as the key reason behind Manchester United's dropped points against Southampton.

United had surged into a 2-1 lead at Old Trafford following strikes from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, after Stuart Armstrong had volleyed Saints ahead. But after missing a string of chances to make it 3-1, United were breached in added time from a set piece as Michael Obafemi turned home despite being challenged by Lindelof.

Former United star Scholes said that Lindelof was "bullied" by the Southampton player and believes the Swedish centre-back may have cost his side two valuable points on this occasion.

"Lindelof I think has to be a stronger there," Scholes told Premier League Productions. "He has to be goal side. He allows himself to get a little bit bullied by the centre forward as he manages gets a foot in.

"I don’t think Lindelof really reads the danger there as he should do as a centre half."

United finished the game with 10 men after Luke Shaw and his replacement Brandon Williams were both withdrawn due to second-half injuries. Shaw rolled his ankle before Williams sustained a nasty gash to his head after a collision with Kyle Walker-Peters.

Solskjaer had only made four of his five permitted substitutes, but had used all three of United's permitted stoppages for substitutions.

United are level on points with fourth-placed Leicester after the Southampton draw and one point behind third-placed Chelsea.

Next up for Solskjaer's men is a trip to Crystal Palace on Thursday night. Palace are on a five-match losing streak.
