Paul Scholes details unusual pre-match meal and superstition behind it

The pre-match meal is regularly a hot topic for debate among footballers following a dramatic shift in diet and preparation in the past 30 years.

These days every aspect of a football player's life is micro-managed by their clubs in persistent search of those marginal gains.

But this wasn't always the case, as 11-time Premier League winner Paul Scholes has admitted to the Back of the Net podcast.

Despite being widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of the Premier League era, former Man Utd star Scholes revealed his pre-match routine was far from exemplary.

When asked what he would eat before a game, Scholes told presenter Gabby Logan: "Beans on toast, always, try to have it all the time. I always had a Turkish Delight as well, the night before the game.

"It was a bit of a superstition, weird that. Two Turkish Delights and a cup of tea, but I’d always buy a packet of three and leave one.”

Perhaps there's something to be said for beans on toast, given it is also the pre-match meal of choice for Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale.

Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer also used to pair baked beans with chicken before a game.

Times have changed in the Premier League with today's stars now boosted by diets that incorporate a range of foods, including pasta, fresh fish and protein shakes.

But former England manager and Liverpool forward Kevin Keegan - who appeared on the podcast with Scholes - was part of a different generation.

Keegan said: “We had steak, chips, gravy…but so did the opposition so we all felt sick!”

Other strange pre-match choices include those of two of Scholes' former Man Utd teammates.

Wayne Rooney previously admitted to FourFourTwo he liked Coco Pops and a banana before a game, while Gary Neville was a fan of "spaghetti with sauce, yoghurt and Ribena".

Well, if it worked for them, who can argue?

The latest episode of Back of the Net will be available on Wednesday evening, only on Amazon Prime Video.
