Paul Scholes claims Manchester United made Erling Haaland transfer mistake

Manchester United favourite Paul Scholes believes the club made a mistake in the transfer market by not signing Erling Haaland from Red Bull Salzburg.

The Norwegian forward left the Austrian side during the January transfer window to join Borussia Dortmund, going on to score 13 goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances in the second half of the season.

Scholes has admitted he wasn't too aware of the forward ahead of the return of football following the coronavirus crisis but, having seen him star when football in Germany returned, believes United missed a trick.

“Yes. Do you know what, when all the talk was about, I hadn’t seen a lot of him," he told BBC Radio 5Live when asked if United should have signed Haaland.

“But then once the German football came back and I watched him properly, I thought: ‘Why did Manchester United not just pay whatever anybody wanted for him?’

“He looks that good, he’s still young, and he’s an out-and-out goalscorer. He’s quick as well, he’s got real pace. He’s a big lad, he’s a presence, and he scores goals – and that’s priceless.

“Looking back – and do you know what, he still might be available, who knows, in time – but United are going to have to pay big, big money for him. But so what? He looks the real deal.”
