Paul Scholes blasts two 'lazy' Manchester United players before Liverpool showdown

Paul Scholes has taken aim at two 'lazy' Manchester United players for leaving their teammates exposed.

Despite getting back to winning ways against Atalanta in the Champions League, the ex-United midfielder openly criticised the Premier League giants for their performance.

Scholes claimed that Jurgen Klopp would be 'rubbing his hands together' at the prospect of facing United - at Old Trafford this Sunday afternoon (4.30pm).

And now, speaking ahead of the Premier League showdown with Liverpool, the 46-year-old has doubled down on two players - Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford - for not tracking back in an attack-minded system.

However, after saying that, Scholes hinted it might be down to instructions from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been targeted in some quarters for allegedly lacking work rate, but he is not the only one to have been subject to such a suggestion.

Scholes said: "I think they're [the forward players] just being lazy.

"I think the two wide players especially, I thought we saw in midweek when United played a 4-2-4 with two sitting players and two wide players, not running back. In Manchester United's team, if you're a wide player and you're not willing to run back, you're going to get exposed."

Scholes added: "I think, to be fair, that's what the manager wanted from that team.

"That's a way of playing that doesn't tell me they can win the league.

"It's a 50/50. It's saying; 'My forwards are better than your forwards, we're going to score more goals than you'.

"That's where he can't get the balance right. They look like scoring goals, they've some great talent in the team.

"We know that, but they are conceding so many chances and look like they'll concede just as many as they score."
