Paul Pogba gives theory why Luke Shaw has improved so much for Manchester United

Paul Pogba suggests Luke Shaw's remarkable season at Manchester United is largely down to the 'trust' which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown in him.

Shaw enjoyed a bright start to life at Old Trafford when he arrived in 2014, but saw his development curtailed by an horrific leg break a year later, before struggling for consistency under Louis van Gaal and, later, Jose Mourinho upon his return.

The England defender was even frozen out of the first-team after Mourinho openly questioned his decision making, suggesting Shaw lacked football intelligence.

Shaw has regained his self-believe under the guidance of Solskjaer and has taken his game to the next level after rival left-back Alex Telles was brought to the club last summer.

The 25-year-old has arguably been United's best player this season and teammate Pogba believes the transformation is largely down to the work of Solskjaer.

"Maybe [Solskjaer's methods work] because he is a bit closer to the people," Pogba told Sky Sports.

"Every coach has their own way to coach and deal with players, and as a player you have to adapt. Sometimes it doesn't suit you and sometimes it does.

"Ole has helped Luke a lot, it was a difficult season with Luke and Mourinho, and he has proved he has the quality he always had and the trust of the manager."
